THE PROCESS

Craw Fest was one portion of a final group project for Graphics 4, where the mission was to create a fantasy city with a population of 3 million. I jumped at the opportunity to take charge of the festival as we built the concept for the birth of this city, and immediately knew that I wanted to do something BIG. I remember discussing with my professors how no idea was too big. Building off the Oro crawfish, a fictional crawfish native to Los Dorados, I began to question teammates who had more experience with festivals and crawfish consumption. There were several guys I knew from Alabama, Oklahoma, and most importantly Louisiana, and based many of the events off what they considered to be vital for a “good” festival. Drawing inspiration from the fictional Oro crawfish native to our city, Los Dorados, I aimed to blend tradition with a modern twist, ensuring the festivities appealed to a wide audience.

COASTAL CALI STATE

CCSU, a Division II institution located in Los Dorados, California, gained prominence for its expertise in biology following a significant medical breakthrough involving a plant abundant in serotonin found in the city's bay. This discovery resulted in a nationwide decrease in antidepressant prices, even enabling Los Dorados to provide free mental health coverage for its residents. Today, Los Dorados has grown into a thriving city of over 3 million inhabitants. Established in 1948 as Coastal California Community College, the Guitarheads established themselves as a Division II stronghold for biology and community service over the years. As members of the East Coast Conference, their women's basketball and baseball teams have achieved national recognition, boasting a total of 5 national championships.

THE PROCESS

Coastal California State University was an extra piece of the Los Dorados project, not strictly necessary but way too enticing to pass up. I was drawn to these large concept ideas, so I couldn't resist crafting my own university. The Guitarheads, affectionately known as the G-Fish, was a concept I toyed with for days. I realized it was a perfect way to blend the coastal vibe of Los Dorados without being too obvious about the city's origin. For me, it's all about the stories—I want to make it believable, not just feasible, even to the average bystander. Initially, I was hyped to develop the sports history at the school, but as I pieced everything together, I became fixated on creating a joyful, uplifting all around environment—a place I'd love to attend myself.

THE PROCESS

Yestopia Surf Shop, my second passion project for the Los Dorados fantasy city assignment, had a unique fabrication compared to anything I'd done before. I sketched the original logo, with only a vague notion behind it—I just couldn't resist capturing that intriguing oxymoron of a name before it slipped from my mind, nearly a year before the project even began. The graffiti-style design evoked the ocean and surf culture, and when I revisited it for the current assignment, I saw how well it meshed with the vibe of Los Dorados. With a few tweaks, it fit perfectly. From there, my artistic instincts kicked in, and I crafted a concept for the shop, emphasizing custom graphics as a key selling point.

THE PROCESS

Fusion Festival, a distinctly separate event from CrawFest, is set in Los Dorados, our fantasy city. Surprisingly, this assignment came from a different class, but I saw it as an exciting challenge to craft an entirely new festival on the exact same grounds. Once I settled on which poster submission would inspire me, I pushed myself even further to create an even greater spectacle. Although this festival spans just three days compared to CrawFest's seven, its lineup and attractions make it undeniably more enticing to the public. With appearances from former presidents to top names in the music industry, it promises a massive crowd. Drawing from various elements of the poster—the galactic backdrop, futuristic alien visuals, and the theme of de-alienation—the project flowed effortlessly. Not only is this festival a dream event I'd gladly splurge on attending, but it also stands out as one of my favorite logo and graphic designs from all my projects. It's a true reflection of my personality in visual form.

THE PROCESS

DecKraft, my custom sports-based playing card company, stemmed from a previous project that I decided to expand upon. I developed a particular passion for this endeavor because I featured actual players from the Fort Hays baseball team, which was a huge hit among those who made it onto a card. Recognizing the niche appeal of such a specific deck, I sought to maintain the Fort Hays players while also creating a company with broader sports appeal, offering customization options at every level of the game. The execution of the box, tailored to fit each piece precisely, was a significant breakthrough for me. I learned various new techniques, from embossing to creating a perfect fit complex box with no excess space, even utilizing a 3D printer and nail polish on the poker chips. In a short period, I gained valuable insights into the level of execution and creativity I was capable of achieving.

JAI BYRD

In the world of custom footwear, Jaidon Kelly from Loveland, Colorado, stands out as a symbol of creativity and authenticity. He launched his own custom shoe line in 2023, showcasing resilience, experimentation, and a dedication to quality. His brand has left a mark on the custom shoe industry, becoming synonymous with style and innovation. While in college pursuing Graphic Design, Kelly's entrepreneurial drive led him to start a print and design shop, despite the setback of the loss of his partner. Undeterred, he experimented with canvas material, laying the groundwork for his custom canvas shoe brand. By limiting each release to 250 pairs, he created exclusivity, driving anticipation for future drops. To mark his first year, Kelly released a magazine celebrating his achievements. Watch out for his 2024 releases!

IMG_6477.JPG

THE PROCESS

Jai Byrd, my second shoe-inspired project, takes a completely different approach. Combining my passion for shoes with an appreciation for customized artwork, I ventured into uncharted territory. Building the magazine was an absolute blast, especially as I drew inspiration from Jaiden Kelly, a fictional character based partially on myself, who kickstarted the sneaker company. Crafting each monthly shoe presented a unique challenge, as I aimed to create recognizable designs with rich backstories while sidestepping copyright issues. Leveraging a mix of my own artwork and AI-enhanced images—my first journey into artificial intelligence for imagery—I ensured each shoe possessed its own unique flair, prioritizing aesthetic appeal over excessive detail. Constructing the physical shoe was a joy in itself. From molding each logo and text onto the shoes to devising a method for applying printable vinyl onto the canvas and crafting a textured box, I was able to integrate both physical and digital elements into the project.

THE PROCESS

Kibitzall, the baseball-inspired board game I created, truly reflects my passion for the sport. Like core memories for anyone, baseball has deeply impacted my life beyond just the games themselves. As a naturally shy kid, baseball introduced me to friendships I wouldn't have forged otherwise, brought my family closer than most, and taught me the power of determination and hard work in shaping one's destiny. I poured all these elements into the design of this board game. I knew I wanted to develop this project back in Graphics 2, having heard about the assignment from upperclassmen, even if just to have it ready to play with my future children. It turned out to be the most challenging graphics project of my time at Fort Hays—I barely slept, driven by excitement to bring it to life. Some peers criticized the game's complexity, but I countered with, 'Simple games don't always capture my attention, and millions of D&D players would agree.' Kibitzall engages multiple skill sets, from puzzle-solving to historical knowledge, physical activity, and even making dice rolls exciting—what more could I ask for?

AVA DELGADO

The Ava Delgado collector's edition stamps offer a complete package for stamp enthusiasts, including 4 envelopes, 4 collector's bi-folds, a 16-stamp sheet, a biography booklet, and premium packaging. Ava Delgado, the artist honored in this collection, began her journey in 1940s San Francisco as a homeless child, using paint store resources to create artworks. Her big break came when a marketing agent noticed her, leading to a collection unveiled in 1954 at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The product's pitch-black packaging reflects Ava's experiences on the streets and can be found at the San Francisco MoMA alongside her original artworks. Following her passing, supporters and the Hispanic community raised nearly a million dollars to sustain her charity organizations, providing homes for thousands of citizens. Despite her absence, Ava Delgado's legacy endures through her impact and artwork.

THE PROCESS

Ava Delgado’s Stamp collection was a unique project because I deliberately chose a topic completely foreign to me: ballet. In my experience, creating the backstory is often overlooked in presentations, but I've always been captivated by the process of developing a comprehensive backstory before diving into graphic design. Not only does it clarify my ideas, but it also stirs up emotions as I write, which I can then translate into the pieces exactly as I intend. Interestingly, the medium used by my fictional artist, Ava Delgado, was initially shadow boxes and sculpting. However, as I considered the practical accessibility of these resources during her life, I realized it wasn't realistic. So, I pivoted to spray paint, a relatively new medium at the time, which seemed more attainable for someone in her circumstances, fitting the canvases into her environment. It was difficult to detach from the artwork I had spent countless hours creating, but now it seems essential for a successful, well-rounded narrative for her and for the project as a whole.

TEMBOU

Amani Housa, born in Kenya, immigrated to the United States, eventually settling on the Island of Kauai, Hawaii. Inspired by Swahili culture, reminiscent of his parents' heritage, he worked as a carpenter while exploring his passion for art. Crafting his own tools, he began selling them to fellow creatives on the island, leading to the establishment of the Pro, Studio, and Craft Series, Hawaii's largest art conglomerate. Influenced by Swahili carvings, his art supplies feature detailed patterns and serene elements. His initial success came with artist sketchpads, reaching a wide market through deals with major retailers like Walmart, reflecting his aim to instill calmness and intelligence in every customer's artistic journey.

THE PROCESS

This project relied heavily on my use of illustration, finding a way to incorporate highly detailed artwork into a project that doesn't necessarily use it as a primary focal point. To combat this, I used bold black lines paired with white space in which the elephants stood. On the execution side of things, the layouts really came together when I incorporated a clear plastic into each, displaying the product more and reducing the distraction caused by the texture. Using four main colors, I thought the separation to be incredibly useful when expanding on the idea of what art supplies could entail, using them as standards for paper, medium tools, liquids, and additional items. With a broad range of colors and multiple series' this project could seemingly reach all ends of the art spectrum. I love to create my own designs and textures rather than pull from and edit ones I find, giving it a more unique and polarized speciality in my own creations, which is evident in every single project I've worked on thus far. Additionally, the ability to create these things prevents future problems in copyright infringement in the professional world.

IMG_6519.PNG

FIBONACCI GAUGE

This project focuses on confronting fears that artists face daily, such as fatigue, skill limitations, critics, self-doubt, and creative processes. The two dragons depicted on the caliper symbolize contrasting ideologies: one representing wisdom and power, while the other embodies sin and evil. Like the two sides of a coin, there are various ways to approach life's obstacles, with outcomes depending on the chosen approach. The wooden box serves as both a stand and a guide to the history of the Fibonacci Gauge. Represented by four animals on one side of the shield — the elephant, wolf, butterfly, and eagle — each symbolizes attributes essential for success. Additionally, the spacious wooden box can accommodate other tools or personal items, aiding in organization and motivation for artists' growth and development.

A shield, used as a metaphor in endless circumstances, can be representative of both good and evil. Avoiding scenarios that can prove beneficial due to fear can be described as a form of shield, where as avoiding scenarios that can prove to cause a negative impact may also cause you to put up your shield in avoidance of the danger. In line with the rest of the project, overcoming fears is one of the best forms of self-growth and maturity.

IMG_6581.JPG

THE PROCESS

The Fibonacci Gauge project presented a unique challenge as it required us to create a narrative without prioritizing branding for a specific company or business. Opting to brand for myself as a designer, I focused on an aesthetic that reflects my love for a particular style of art. Drawing inspiration from my own fears, I sought to symbolize both the positive and negative effects of fear and methods of shielding oneself from them. Utilizing the golden ratio as the foundation for every design, I found it to be the perfect technique for this assignment, with numerous references to the ratio throughout. Despite the limited tools provided in the project, without additional fluff objects or bonus pieces, I leveraged this design technique to create a visually pleasing piece while also satisfying an artist's appreciation for tool storage and usage.

TAB HEI

Tabitha Kay, founder of Tab Hei Gourmet Sandwich Shop, began her journey in the 1920s as a courageous young woman. Sneaking onto a ship bound for Brazil, she ventured into a new world filled with unique flavors. On her journey, she explored new cultures and cuisines, eventually discovering the Mava bean, which she later used to establish her restaurant as a Charleston staple, inspired by the Atlantic Ocean's greenish hue. Upon her return to Charleston, SC, she incorporated this ingredient into her restaurant, symbolizing the bond between home and her culinary creations. Today, operated by her two children, Tab Hei remains a must visit destination in South Carolina, embodying Tabitha's adventurous spirit and culinary legacy.

THE PROCESS

Tab Hei, our final project for Graphics 2 group, marked my second experience working collaboratively. After brainstorming background ideas and logo concepts, I took on the task of crafting our final logo, storefronts, additional iconography, business cards, cover letter, and envelope. Together with Daniel Perez, Teagan Valdez, and Marisa Schindler, our concept came to life beautifully, seamlessly tying back to the history of our fictional founder, Tabitha Kay. We aimed for a blend of classiness, excitement, and historical relevance, reflected in every aspect from the store design to our product packaging. By incorporating the Mava bean, a hypothetical new spice we developed as a core ingredient, along with personified bean characters, artisan-style artwork, and fun packaging, we created a cohesive narrative that I felt left room for further expansion, given the well-rounded nature of our project.

THE PROCESS

Kiksominoes, a twist on the classic dominoes game, is another project that displays one of my passions; shoes. While I’m not the classic sneaker head with background knowledge of models and histories, the visual aesthetic of shoes has stuck with me since I was a little kid. Bringing to life one of my actual shoe collections; a set of miniature shoe models, I built this game. Adding the touches of the lockers with scorecards, interchangeable dominoes, and even the shoe display on the packaging itself, my appreciation for the shoe aesthetic is clearly evident. This project was completely rebuilt over the summer, and since I wasn’t satisfied with how it first turned out, the end result made me extremely proud. One of my brighter colored projects, I infused a number of shoe styles into something cohesive, engaging and sleek. Most definitely a high ticket item for your common sneaker head, I have no doubt that someone willing to pay 300 dollars for dozens of pairs of shoes would be willing to pay the same for this collectible game.
